Planning a funeral can be overwhelming, especially during a time of grief. This checklist will help guide you through the necessary steps.

Immediately After Death

Obtain a Legal Pronouncement of Death (from a doctor, hospice, or medical examiner).

Notify Close Family and Friends (by phone, text, or social media).

Check for Pre-Planned Funeral Arrangements (wills, prepaid plans, or burial preferences).

Arrange for the Body to Be Transported (to a funeral home, crematory, or medical examiner’s office).

Within the First Few Days

Choose a Funeral Home (compare services and pricing if needed).

Decide on Burial or Cremation (and choose a cemetery or urn if applicable)

Start Gathering Personal and Legal Documents:

  • Death certificate (you’ll need multiple copies).

  • Will, trust, or estate planning documents.

  • Social Security number, military records (if applicable).

Notify Important Parties:

  • Employer

  • Social Security Administration

  • Life insurance provider

  • Banks and financial institutions

Draft and Submit an Obituary (if desired).

Funeral or Memorial Service Planning

Decide on the Type of Service:

  • Traditional funeral

  • Memorial service

  • Celebration of life

  • Religious or cultural ceremony

Set a Date, Time, and Location for the service.

Arrange for Clergy, Officiant, or Speaker (if applicable).

Select a Casket or Urn (if not pre-planned).

Choose Pallbearers (if having a burial).

Arrange Transportation for Family and Guests (if needed).

Select Music, Readings, or Eulogies (family members may want to contribute).

Choose Flowers, Memorials, or Charitable Donations in honor of the deceased.

Plan a Reception or Gathering (food, location, and invitations).

Final Steps

Order the Death Certificate (needed for legal and financial matters).

Settle Estate Matters:

  • Contact a lawyer (if necessary).

  • Handle financial accounts and property.

Cancel or Transfer Accounts and Subscriptions (utilities, credit cards, memberships).

Address Personal Belongings (sorting through items with family).

Consider Grief Support (counseling or support groups).
