Terry VenablesJanuary 1943November 2023Terence Frederick Venables (6 January 1943 – 25 November 2023), often referred to as El Tel,[1] was an English footballer and manager who played for clubs including Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers and won two caps for England. As a manager, Venables won the Second Division championship with Crystal Palace in 1979. He reached the 1982 FA Cup Final with Queens Park Rangers and won the Second Division in 1983. Karl Anthony Merrett1 April 19918 February 2025Karl, 33, a loving son, brother, uncle, partner, friend, and most proudly, a devoted father to two beautiful girls. His life was one lived with authenticity and compassion. He poured love into every role he held—never doing things by halves, always giving his whole heart. Karl began his working life with his hands in the earth, as a self-employed gardener, before answering a deeper call to service. He joined the fire service and later found his true vocation in the Welsh Ambulance Service Trust. With determination and humility, he worked his way up from patient transport to Emergency Medical Technician. At the time of his passing, he was studying at Swansea University alongside his close friends Dan, Tracy, and Rachel, due to graduate as a Paramedic in 2026 . His colleagues and mentors remember him not only for his skill and dedication, but for his laughter, his warmth, and of course, his fist bumps. Karl had been stationed in Tredegar most of his NHS career, but it was Llandeilo that became his final station, where he built his most recent home with his partner, Lorna. He made a life there filled with love, laughter, and silly dancing. Born and raised in Penarth, Karl grew up with the salty breeze in his hair and the spirit of adventure in his soul. His childhood was filled with holidays camping down the Gower, surfing at Llangennith, climbing trees in the Maldives, and road trips through Europe to the Italian town of Rioveggio. It was in these landscapes that Karl’s love for nature, freedom, and a little chaos began—passions that stayed with him always. Mountain walks up the Brecon Beacons accompanied by his best friend Kyle, and a cigar, were amongst his favourite things to do. He loved a stormy sky, muddy boots, and the wildness of the Welsh hills. The worse the weather, the more they relished it. He treasured evenings spent at his childhood home, eating his mothers homemade food and sampling whiskey with his dad, deep in conversation. A natural performer with an infectious spirit, Karl shared a lifelong bond with his childhood friend Harrison, tied together by a love for theatre and storytelling. It was not long ago that he visited Harrison and his wife, Olivia, at their home in London. The weekend was a whirlwind of laughter, memories, and a rather unforgettable night at The Box—though the full story of that evening remains locked away with Harry, Olivia, and Lorna. He shared a deep love of music with his friend Ian, often planning their next concert with boyish excitement. Karl’s playlists were full of passion and soul—Imagine Dragons, Linkin Park, and Hozier were among his favourites. But the top spot was always reserved for Lorna's rendition of 'I'm a little teapot.' Above all, Karl’s greatest pride was his two daughters. He was a father who played dress-up, who listened with intent, who gave all he had to their joy. The day before his passing was one of pure delight—running through soft play, laughing, and holding hands with his girls, his partner, and his parents. That night, his eldest daughter stayed with him and Lorna. They spent the afternoon drawing, planting flowers and tomato seeds, playing doctors, and learning to write (his daughter, not Karl). The next morning Karl woke to her sneaking in for a cuddle, where they watched their favourite Bluey episodes, before making a mountain of pancakes together for the whole family. Later that day, they took Estelle to the stables and stroked their favourite horses. Karl gave a repeat performance to 'I'm just Ken' the entire way home, at his daughters request; he crushed it. It was a day filled with all the things Karl loved most—family, laughter, mess, and love. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humour, courage, and unwavering love. His presence remains in the waves at Llangennith, in the whisper of the wind across the Brecon hills, in the melodies he loved, and in the hearts of everyone lucky enough to know him. To know Karl was to know joy. And though he is no longer with us, the joy he gave continues—growing like the cherry blossom tree planted in his memory at his home in Llandeilo, where he found final peace.
